Aquatic Centre: Open for Business

Goodfellow Aquatic Centre Opens

Twenty years after the idea of an Aquatic centre at Kardinia was first discussed, the Goodfellow Aquatic centre officially opened for business on Friday. If first impressions and reflections are anything to go by, the wait was well worth it!

The students who participated in Learn to swim trials on Friday and Saturday with H2O were smiling from ear to ear having experienced the pool for the first time. Similarly, parents were equally impressed with the facility and spoke in glowing terms of the quality of both the facility and the swimming instruction from H20.

This week our Junior School Learn to swim program begins as well as after school swimming lessons from H20. H20 offer a range of learn to swim classes for children, teenagers and adults as well as squad and fitness sessions. For further information please visit the H20 website

We will be installing a coffee machine in the Aquatic Centre cafeteria in the coming weeks and serving food and drinks. Further details will be provided once this part of the facility is operational.

School Review

We know that the most effective strategy for improving student achievement is to improve the day to day quality of teaching and learning. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) has produced a National School Improvement Tool to assist schools to reflect on their efforts to improve the quality of classroom teaching and learning in order to support targeted planning.

Next week we will host 3 ACER accredited Review officers who will be conducting an audit of our current practices compared to the nine inter-related domains in the National School Improvement Tool. The review officers will be spending time in classrooms, meeting with groups of students, staff and parents, analysing school data and examining school policies, procedures and protocols.

Following the review, a report will be written which highlights areas to be commended at Kardinia along with recommendations for us to focus on as we move forward. These recommendations will be incorporated into the 2017-2020 Strategic Plan which we are currently developing.

We are excited about the opportunity to receive external feedback on our work and the major outcomes of the review will be shared with the community in the coming weeks.

Have a great week!

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to all students, parents and staff to what is already shaping up to be a very busy term 3. I trust that you all had a relaxing term break with family and friends and that the term got off to a positive start this morning.

Chiang Mai

During the holidays I was fortunate enough to visit our Chiang Mai campus for the first time. Everything I heard about Chiang Mai was confirmed for me during my visit and I left feeling extremely positive about the program and the experience we provide to the Year 9 students fortunate enough to take part in the program. The campus itself is a beautiful resort set in a secure location near the local University with easy access to all facilities such as hospitals, shopping centres and of course the wonderful tourist locations in Chiang Mai. The staff are amazing and I can assure parents that the children are treated with a great deal of respect and care throughout their stay and treated like they are part of a local family. I was also very impressed with both the quality and variety of the program that are students are exposed. The program has a nice balance of challenge, support and celebration which the students responded to in a positive way. All in all, a very positive experience and one I know our current year 9 students are enjoying.

Goodfellow Aquatic Centre

For those of you who have driven down Ballarat Rd recently, you will have noticed that the Aquatic Centre is nearing completion. We are still on schedule to receive the keys on July 14 with classes scheduled to begin next week. The official opening ceremony is set for the evening of August 18. Unfortunately, due to building restrictions, we are unable to invite the entire community to that event however we will be inviting all parents who donated money towards the installation of the solar panels in the roof along with student and staff representatives. Further details regarding the opening will be forthcoming.

Kardinia Grove

Building work at Kardinia Grove is progressing according to schedule. This term we will be inviting current year 4 parents to an information evening at school where we will share plans for 2017 including curriculum and anticipated program details. Later in the year we will arrange further meetings out at the Kardinia Grove campus so that parents and students can experience this unique opportunity first hand.

Farewell to Leretta Mellington

Many of you will have come across Leretta in her various roles at Kardinia over the years and will have experienced her warm personality. Leretta has recently decided to leave Kardinia and pursue other interests. I am sure I speak on behalf of the entire Kardinia community when I thank Leretta for her tireless support of the school over many years and wish her all the very best for the future.

Have a great week!
